Reason

In CF, reason is the evolutionary process of finding and correcting mistakes. It's a method and a capacity, not a guarantee of truth.

CR's definition

CR treats reason as:

• A product of evolution.
• A way of handling fallibility.
• A public, criticisable process — not a private intuition.

CF's definition

CF extends this with:

• Reason is about being good at finding mistakes. "Reason is about being good at finding and correcting mistakes."
• Reason uses error-correction as its engine. Progress comes from corrections, not confirmations.
• Reason is active skill. You must practice it.
• Reason applies to all fields. Including politics, art, and personal relationships.

What reason is not

• Not pure logic. Logic is a tool, not the whole of reason.
• Not certainty. Reason is fallible.
• Not anti-emotion. Emotions are part of rational living (see emotion).
